SHARI GOHAR EL-QAIT

Shari Gohar el-Qait is a long pedestrianised street in old Cairo. The touristy shops and stalls that line its upper end soon give way to those selling household goods, clothes and foodstuffs to the locals, the street narrows and quickly becomes thronging with mothers in the nijab carrying babies, men carting vast sacks on their shoulders, women balancing packages on their heads, youths trundling trolleys by. It is a street that perfectly encapsulates the vitality, noise, bustle and teeming humanity of the biggest city in the Arabic world.
