SAHARAN SANDSCAPES
These photographs were taken in two locations in the Libyan Sahara: near the border with Algeria, and in the Sebha region in the central west of the country. I was drawn to the contrast between the intimidating vastness of the landscape – huge sand-hills stretching hundreds of feet high, beyond which the desert extends for another thousand miles – and the delicate intricacies of the patterns formed by the interplay of wind and sand.
Few people set eyes on the places in these pictures, which were taken up to 60 miles from the nearest road. And anyway the desert is continually shifting; within weeks, days or hours the wind can transform locations beyond recognition. That uncharted, pristine quality and the sense of transience are part of the beauty and otherness of the places in these pictures.
